The Wawel Hill in the centre of Krakow with its complex of buildings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When visiting Krakow, the Wawel Hill with its impressive buildings is not to be missed: The hill, an outcrop of the Krakow-Czestochowa Jura, is only 228 metres high, yet towers majestically above the city. On the hill are several buildings that have grown, been destroyed and modernised over the centuries, blending elements of Romanticism, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.
The Wawel Castle served as the seat of Polish kings for centuries. Today you will find an art museum here. The Wawel Cathedral (Royal Basilica) was built around the year 1000 and served as the coronation site of the Polish monarchs for a long time. Also worth seeing is the Rotunda of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
There is also excitement beneath the surface: the Smocza Jama, dragon's lair is located in the massif of the Wawel. Legend has it that a dragon once lived in a karst cave.
