Iconic roofless abbey in the Wye Valley.
Tintern Abbey is one of the most famous monastic ruins in Britain and occupies a picturesque position in the Wye Valley. Founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks, the abbey became an important religious and agricultural centre before its dissolution under Henry VIII.
The soaring roofless church, Gothic windows, and peaceful riverside setting have inspired artists, writers, and travellers for centuries, including William Wordsworth. Visitors can wander through the dramatic ruins and learn about monastic life in medieval Wales.
Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter.
Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
