The White Bastion Tower is on the road Dariva – Moscanica, set on the eastern side of Sarajevo valley. It was built on the site of a medieval fortress which was built around 1550. The upper part of the bastion was built of large stone boulders originating from the Austro-Hungarian period. The tower has historically been of great importance for the defence of the city, such as during the attacks of Austrian Prince Eugene of Savoy in the 17th century and Austrian Army in 1878. In the Middle Ages, the region of Sarajevo belonged to the parish of “Vrhbosna”, and in 1379 it was mentioned as a city of Vrhbosna. It was in addition to other parishes an integral part of the Bosnian state.

The central fortress Vrhbosna was Hodided old town (which is thought to be the present White bastion). White bastion is treated as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is listed as a national monuments by the State Commission for Preservation of National Monuments; decisions concerning its use are under the authority of the city of Sarajevo.
