Tervasaari has been a harbor since the 18th century, although the city's most important port was located in Hietakylä at that time. The old port began to become cramped in the 19th century due to steamship traffic. As a result, from the 1880s onwards, Tervasaari has been the town shipping hub and served as an official border crossing point.
The Tervasaari area is an enjoyable recreation area with several restaurants and a public beach.
