The oldest brewing town in Austria - with almost completely preserved town walls.
A picturesque little town like very few others in Austria. The medieval flair of Austria's oldest brewing town attracts numerous visitors every year. The almost completely preserved town wall adds to Weitra's fascination.
The castle towers high above the town. Below it, the town's medieval houses are lined up close together on the main square, as colorful as if painted. The town is protectively surrounded by the old town wall, which has been almost completely preserved to this day. The castle town of Weitra was built by Hadmar II von Kuenring. The town wall was mentioned in documents shortly afterwards in 1292.
A fortified town with charm
Weitra was a fortified community in the Middle Ages. The citizens of the town and the surrounding villages were called upon to perform regular guard and castle duty. One of the former watchtowers is still preserved - it can be found at the town's bell foundry. The promenades and town gardens are located where the kennels used to be. A picturesque turn-of-the-century pavilion stands on the remains of another tower as a lookout point. Even today, you enter the town through the medieval "Zwettler Tor" gate.
Experiences and excursions around Weitra
Anyone visiting Weitra or spending their vacation here will find numerous activities in the surrounding area to enrich their stay. Whether mountain biking on the Granittrail, cycling on the Iron Curtain Trail, hiking on the Weitra Beer Trail or in the Gabrielental valley. There is a suitable program for everyone. A night watchman tour through the town takes you back to a bygone era. At nightfall, you accompany the night watchman on his tour and visit medieval gems such as the Sgrafittohaus, the cistern or the Auhof with its late Gothic beamed ceiling.
