Das Schnallentor war Teil der Steyrer Stadtbefestigung im idyllischen Steyrdorf.
„Schnalle“ war die Bezeichnung für eine alte Münze. In früheren Zeiten war das Schnallentor eine Mautstelle: Wer mit einem Fuhrwerk in die Stadt wollte, musste Pflastermaut bezahlen. Auch heute noch wird der obere Teil der Gleinkergasse volkstümlich Schnallenberg genannt.
