Château de Rambouillet, around 50 kilometres west of Paris, has a rich history dating back to the 14th century. Originally a medieval fortress, the site was transformed into a royal residence in the 16th century. During the reign of Louis XVI, the château was enlarged and embellished, becoming a place of pleasure and hunting for the court. Over the centuries, it has witnessed a variety of historic events, welcoming illustrious personalities.
In 1783, the peace treaty between the United States and the United Kingdom, putting an end to the American War of Independence, was negotiated in Rambouillet. Later, Napoleon I and Charles X also left their mark on the château.
The Rambouillet estate has continued to play a political and social role over the centuries. Today, the château is used mainly for official and ceremonial purposes, while retaining its historic charm and magnificent gardens.
