Old pharmacy

In 1822, the Augsburg doctor and pharmacist Jakob Byschl opened the first pharmacy in Garmisch in the building. This remained the only one in the area for almost 90 years, until a pharmacy also opened in Partenkirchen in 1910. The pharmacy remained in the family for more than a century. The pharmacy was probably also used to make medicine from St. John's wort, which is still considered a mood-enhancer today. In Scotland, the herb is known by the Gaelic name 'Achlasan Chaluim Chille', roughly translated as "Columba's armful". It is said that a shepherd boy was afraid to herd his animals alone at night. When St. Columban heard about this, he pressed a tuft of the plant under the shepherd's armpit - and the boy's fear disappeared.
