Aerial cableway constructed in 1893 to transport men and materials to the construction site of the dams on top of Table Mountain.
During the construction of the Table Mountain dams, an aerial cableway was constructed in 1893 to transport men and materials to the construction site. The cableway was 1600 m long and rose 700 m, using open skips to carry supplies and materials. Powered by a steam winch, it carried 155 kg to the top in 12 minutes. From the summit at the top of Kasteels Poort, a mini railway and small locomotive were laid out to haul the material across the mountain to the construction site.
