A shortcut was built from Lake Saimaa to the Mäntyharju water system in 1910, and that’s when Miekankoski became the junction between two important waterways. Logs were floated here until 1975. The island’s log drivers’ hut, workshop and warehouse were renovated and turned into a museum and tourist site. The old buildings now house a summer café, a small handicrafts shop and a log floating museum. The museum is part of the Mäntyharju Museum. Entry is free and it is open during the café’s opening hours.
Miekankoski is also a popular site for rapids fishing for trout, pikeperch and whitefish. Spin fishing and fly fishing are permitted with a special licence, but live bait is not allowed. Fishing with worms is not allowed in the rapids area. Special licences can be purchased at the summer café, where canoes, kayaks, rowing boats and bicycles are also available to hire. The Miekankoski area is not very big, but it offers a variety of things to see and do.
