In the 19th century Mauthausen became famous for the Mauthausen granite that the Mauthausen stone industry supplied to the major cities of the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg monarchy. It was used for paving stones and the construction of buildings and bridges. The Nibelungen Bridge in Linz, which is Hitler´s hometown, was built from 1938 to 1940 with granite from Mauthausen. To do this, the prisoners had to split blocks of stone from the rock, crush them and transport them away. They were driven on by fellow inmates, so-called kapos. The granite stones were generally intended to expand Hitler´s home town Linz.
If you are on the Danube on a cruise ship or on bike on the Danube Cycle Path or on foot on the Danube Hiking Path, you may not want to be reminded of this dark time, however.
