At the end of the 19th century Villach became a booming railway town. The construction of railway lines from 1864 onwards caused a population influx and the city grew rapidly. Here in Villach, the most important main railway lines in Europe cross and thus Villach has two railway stations. The main train station is a building of the postwar period. During World War II the old station was destroyed during Allied air raids. However, the Western train station in Steinwender Straße remained unharmed and the historical building is often the setting for cultural events and exhibitions.
