Pfalz Insider Tips – Landau - Green Garden City
Landau, the metropolis of the South Palatinate, is primarily known as a fortress and university city.
advanced baroque fortification,
1700–02, city architect engineer-colonel Jacques de Tarade
further expansion 1705–33 and 1743, transformation into a park after 1883;
main wall with crownwork consisting of two half and three full bastions, main ditch, ditch scissors,
remains of the outworks and underground facilities
including: Monument Emich von Leiningen and Rudolf von Habsburg as well as Bismarck Tower[4]
1700-1702 built on a northwestern elevation for the protection and reinforcement of the fortress as a citadel and separated from it by a flood basin. Main wall intact, dry ditch and predominantly preserved outworks and half moons.
Inside the fort, instead of former military buildings, the university built from 1960 - 1964.
In the rear basin, a bird sanctuary was created in 1905. This led to the establishment of the first zoo in the Palatinate; today Landau Zoo.
