Tief hat sich die Wipper einst durch die Felsen der Hainleite gefressen. Heute finden sich am Durchbruch steile Felsformationen und Klippen. Schon in der Bronzezeit gab es auf dem exponiert gelegegenen Kohenstein auf der Ostseite des Tals eine befestigte Anlage. Später wurde Sie zu einer Wallburg ausgebaut.

Im Volksmund ist die Erhebung über dem Tal auch als Schwedenschanze bekannt. Die Wallburg war relativ kompliziert angelegt und bot durch ein ausgeklügletes System von Mauern und Gräben Schutz vor Feinden. Die Vorburg hatte eine stolze Größe von 195.000 m². Die kleinere Hauptburg war mit 65.000 m² auch immer noch groß für damalige Verhältnisse ausgelegt.

Auf dem Gelände wurden bei Grabungen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts zahlreiche Schmuckstücke aus der Bronzezeit gefunden. Darunter Arm- und Beinringe, Armspiralen und Drahtringen. Außerdem Topfscherben und zahlreiche große Bronzeringen.

Der Wipperdurchbruch ist mit 632 ha nach der Hohen Schrecke (3437 ha) und dem Süd-West-Kyffhäuser (832 ha) das drittgrößte Naturschutzgebiet des Kyffhäuserkreises.
