The Grotti of Ponte Brolla are impressive witnesses of times gone by, originally constructed to store food supplies.
The forty or so ancient grotti (caves) of Ponte Brolla are constructions built beneath large stone slabs that were once used as pantries, especially for storing food during the hot summer months. Thanks to the cold air currents that form underground, the internal temperature of these grottos remains constant at around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius in summer. Traditionally, there are stone tables and benches in front of the grotti, where the patrician families of Tegna used to meet in the shade to eat together on hot days.
