The Georgenburse was first mentioned in 1456. Martin Luther (1483–1546) probably lived there as a student between 1501 and 1505, until, just after his Masters examinations, he decided to become a monk at the nearby Augustinian Monastery. However, there is no proof that Luther actually lived here as a student.
Based on a map of Erfurt dated 1675, the exhibition concentrates on the Reformer’s time at university and student life as it was back then. From 1392, Erfurt University was seen throughout the Middle Ages as the most important university after Prague and was the centre of humanism.
