A Journey into the Heart of Strasbourg's Military History
A few kilometers from Strasbourg, on the heights of Hausbergen in Mundolsheim, Fort Ducrot invites visitors to discover an exceptional military heritage that bears witness to nearly 150 years of Alsatian history. Built between 1879 and 1882 by German authorities following the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine, Fort Podbielski (renamed Fort Ducrot after 1918) is the last and smallest of the forts in Strasbourg’s fortified belt. Perched on a narrow ridge, its asymmetrical layout and original architecture make it a unique fort within Strasbourg’s fortifications. But the fort has another distinctive feature: in the 1930s, it was incorporated into the French defensive system and converted into a command post for the Maginot Line. Its original facades were then covered with concrete, giving the site its current appearance. Visitors can thus explore, in the same location, the remains of a 19th-century German fortification and the French structures of the Maginot Line. Today, the fort is coming back to life thanks to the work of the Friends of Fort Ducrot. For several years now, volunteers have been restoring the buildings, preserving historical objects and documents, and gradually reconstructing the fort’s various areas. During the tour, discover the barracks, the corridors, the rampart, the dry moat, the former military installations, and the Maginot command post. A fascinating journey into the history of fortifications and the defining moments of Strasbourg’s and Alsace’s history. Whether you’re curious about history, passionate about heritage, or simply looking for an unusual outing near Strasbourg: step inside Fort Ducrot and let yourself be surprised by this place steeped in history!
