Und wenn er dies tat, der Herr Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, weltberühmter Dichter und Minister in Weimar, dann machte er in Hof Station, das in der Mitte zwischen seinem Wohnort und den böhmischen Bädern liegt.
Außer schönen Mädchen und einem Glas Wein im "Gasthof Zum Goldenen Hirschen" lobte Goethe die Landschaft rund um Hof. Im Rehauer Forst und im Fichtelgebirge ging er auf Exkursion, um vor allem die Geologie zu studieren. Seine Eindrücke hielt er in Zeichnungen fest.
Den ehemaligen Steinbruch am Sand, der nachweislich im 17. Jahrhundert im Betrieb gewesen war, besuchte Goethe am 26. Mai 1807.
Gegen 1750, als Kommunbrauer Nikolaus Salomon Meinel einen Felsenkeller in das Gestein des Steinbruchs treiben ließ, war dieser längst geschlossen. Jetzt begann die zweite Karriere des Steinbruchs als Sitz einer Brauerei.
