Locks - connection for inland navigation. The Franco-German convention of Paris signed in 1969 allowed the construction of the locks and the Gambsheim hydroelectric power plant on the Rhine, commissioned in 1974. The locks are managed by Voies Navigables de France and the hydroelectric development by CERGA, a subsidiary of EDF.
Location: kilometre point 309 on the Rhine (PK Rhine 309) from the outlet of Lake Constance, 16 km downstream of Strasbourg. With their 270 m long and 24 m wide and an average gradient of 10.65 m, they are the largest locks on France's inland waterways.
