Farm estate
On the southern outskirts of Ruwer, not far from the road to Eitelsbach, lie the tower-flanked buildings of Duisburgerhof next to a park-like little wood. This farm originally belonged to the Lords of Schonenberg. They sold it in the 17th century to the Archbishop of Trier, Philipp Christoph von Sötern. During the French period, the farm was auctioned off and in the 19th century was bequeathed by its owner to the Episcopal Convict in Trier, which still owns this farm today.
Two parts of the current farm complex still date back to the Middle Ages. Firstly, the four-story residential tower on the southwestern corner, which has a stair tower added in front. It dates from the 14th century and is adorned on the courtyard side with a wide, rounded archway, bricked up except for a doorway. The windows are partially framed in pointed arches made of red sandstone. Above the old entrance is an emblematic frame. It contains an inscription stating that Hugo von Schonenberg, a canon and singer in Trier, had the residence tower modernized in the year 1571. During this renovation, the second and fourth floors were fitted with new windows. The stair tower contains a stone spiral staircase, in which space has been left in the core for a hold rope. In 1588, the stair tower received its own portal in Renaissance forms with the coat of arms of the von Schonenberg family. The former living quarters on the northwestern corner, which is now used as a stable, was also designed in such a way that it could be defended if necessary.
The remaining buildings were remodeled or newly constructed in the 19th century. For example, in 1840, former stables were transformed into a hall building that is now connected to the residential tower on the east side. Even today, the Duisburgerhof serves the Episcopal Convict, which conducts viticulture and agriculture here, as an economic building.
