The Colosseum was a place of martyrdom for Christians in ancient Rome, through circus spectacles and fights against beasts and armed opponents. Some believe it was erected with materials, remains, and treasure from the Temple of Jerusalem, after its destruction in 70 A.D. by the Roman Empire during the First Jewish-Roman War. Others simply see a symbolic link of power and greatness following the empire's victory over Jerusalem.
