Map / Circuit des Stolpersteine
Stolpersteine are brass pavers set into the ground in memory of the victims of Nazism. %C0 In Obernai, 21 of them have been laid to honor local victims.
The Stolpersteine concept was invented by German artist Gunter Demnig, who did extensive research into people who were persecuted, hunted down and deported during the Nazi period.
Stolpersteine is the plural of the German word Stolperstein, which literally means "a stumbling stone" and thus refers to an obstacle. Stolpersteine are small concrete paving stones with an engraved brass plate, set into the ground. Each cube recalls the memory of a person persecuted, deported or murdered in a concentration camp, a killing center or in other tragic circumstances? Each brass plaque bears the words "Hier wohnte" (here lived), the name, date of birth and individual fate of the deportee, the place of deportation and the date of death. Embedded in the sidewalk in front of the last home of the victims, several thousand Stolpersteine have been placed in this way since 1993, first in Germany, then in many European countries. On June 13, 2022, 13 memorial paving stones were laid in Obernai to honor local victims of Nazism. This tribute continued on Friday, April 12, 2024, with the laying of a further 8 paving stones.
