Exceptionally preserved Roman bathhouse and legionary remains.
The Roman Baths at Caerleon are among the best-preserved Roman military bathhouses in Britain. Built nearly 2,000 years ago, the baths formed part of the fortress of Isca Augusta, home to the Second Augustan Legion. Bathing was an essential social and cultural activity for Roman soldiers, and the remains provide an extraordinary insight into daily life on the edge of the Roman Empire.
Visitors can explore the cold rooms, warm rooms, hot rooms, and open-air exercise areas, alongside an excellent museum displaying Roman artefacts uncovered during excavations. The atmospheric underground remains allow visitors to experience one of the most impressive Roman sites anywhere in the United Kingdom.
Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter.
Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
