Der Bucksturm wurde Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts als Wachturm innerhalb der Stadtmauer errichtet. Ursprünglich war er mit etwa 28 Metern Höhe der höchste Befestigungsturm der Stadt. Wegen Baufälligkeit wurden 1805 zehn Meter abgetragen, der Turm erhielt ein neues Dach. Wie viele Geschosse der Bucksturm ursprünglich hatte, ist ebenso wie große Teile seiner Baugeschichte unbekannt.
