Imposing jewel of Riga, where once mainly merchants met.
The original Schwarzhäupterhaus (in Latvian: Melngalvju nams) was built as early as 1334. It was mainly merchants from the Hanseatic city of Riga who met there. From the 15th century onwards, the Black Merchants' Company, which gave the building its name, gathered in the magnificent building, which they bought outright in 1713.
The building is the home of the Black Merchants' Company.
The building was completely destroyed during the Second World War – in 1999 the newly built Schwarzhäupterhaus was reopened. This fulfilled the proverb above the entrance: "If I should fall down, build me up again".
Today, concerts and other events take place there.
