The Biedenbacher Woog on the Leinbach near Frankenstein is one of three preserved historical rafting facilities in the lower Leinbach Valley. Due to its good structural condition, it holds particular cultural-historical significance.
The Biedenbacher Woog was created in 1838 for timber floating in the Palatinate Forest and, together with the Mittlerer Woog and Finsterthaler Woog, served to supply towns with limited timber resources, such as Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, and Landau, with firewood. Logs were transported via the Leinbach stream until the late 19th century. The name “Klause” dates back to the time when the Palatinate belonged to Bavaria; alternatively, the Woog is also called Unterer Biedenbacher Woog.
Technically, it is a Woog located in the stream, which is fed entirely by the Leinbach. In 2010, it had an area of around 1,200 m² and a maximum dam height of 1.93 meters. The dam consists of a sandstone wall, which has been renovated and supplemented with additional overflow and relief structures. The dam also features Ritterstein No. 156 with the inscription “Biedenbacherwoog.”
