On the right bank of the Rhine, this dam is mobile, allowing a flood flow of up to 7,200 m³/s to be discharged. It consists of six 20m wide passages, each equipped with a segment gate and a spillway.
It is the Centre de Conduite Hydraulique (CCH) in Kembs that remotely controls (more than 100km between the two locations) the flow of the Rhine in the hydroelectric power station and consequently in the dam. The opening of the dam can also be very sudden.
In the event of flooding, the floodgates open gradually. The level of the Rhine rises downstream and the islands are gradually covered, posing a potential risk to people who may have ventured onto the islands and peninsulas or on boats downstream of the dam.
