Abri l'Ancienne Redoute

The shelter was built in 1931 and 1932 near what was still just a crossroads at the edge of the village, some ten meters from the Muehlrhein, a river running parallel to the Rhine. Situated just over 500 meters from the river, its mission was to cover the rear of the casemates located on the bank, preventing them from being bypassed by infiltrating patrols that had crossed the Rhine upstream or downstream of the casemates. It takes advantage of the axes of fire offered by the Rhine road and the Muehlrhein river.
This 200m³ concrete parallelepiped was designed to house a combat group of around ten men, who would patrol the area or, in the event of combat, take up positions outside with machine guns or mortars. The shelter's defensive armament includes 2 machine guns supplied with a total of 10,000 rounds, which equip the bell and a single caponier crenellation. This is not the kind of armament that will enable the shelter to take its place in battle. Its main function will therefore be as a command post and telephone switchboard for the Drusenheim sector.
