Lutter houses are made of stone and have no half-timbering. They are massive and multi-storey. Some are more like stately homes than small farms.
They have been transformed over the centuries. But you can still make out certain unmistakable details, such as the Renaissance-style mullioned windows and the often arched doors. Look up at the attic windows, which are chamfered, typical of this period.
A question mark for researchers: the sculpted half-spheres on the corner quoins.
Many of them still have a wooden gallery on the second floor.
You can continue your walk up the stream and into the forest as far as Saint-Joseph?s oratory.
