What was once a grazing ground, even called “cattle island”, is today a discreet residential area.

The Saint-Louis en l’Ile church, Polish library and famous Bertillon ice cream shop are all found there. It was once home to such illustrious names as Baudelaire, Voltaire, Camille Claudel and Jean-Claude Brialy. Today, picnickers gather on the banks of the Seine overlooking Ile de la Cité, or in Square Barye at the other end of the islet to simply watch the river flow by.The quiet, insular feel inspired poet Louis Aragon to praise this “island at the heart of the city where all is eternally calm”.
