Stadt Delitzsch in der LEIPZIG REGION
Delitzsch - a pearl in northern Saxony
The town is located in the northern part of the Leipzig region. The historic town center with its small alleyways and narrow streets clearly shows the settlement structure from the 15th century. It is surrounded by an imposing 1.4 km long city wall with a water-filled moat, which was part of the former medieval fortifications. This was redesigned in the 19th century and since then has been an inviting place to stroll around the picturesque old town with its shady promenade and avenue of lime trees. In addition to the two town towers, the spires of the medieval town church of St. Peter and Paul and the tower of the baroque castle dominate the townscape.
The baroque castle is one of the oldest castles in Saxony and has a lovingly landscaped garden in the French style. The opulent interior of the castle rooms is also impressive. From the tower you have a beautiful view over Delitzsch and the surrounding area.
The town clerk's house and the mayor's house with their magnificent entrance portals are also impressive. The German Cooperative Museum at Kreuzgasse 10 is an insider tip for a tour of the town, as the idea of cooperatives originates from the town's most famous son, Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch , and is on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The city park with its wide lawns, fountains and rose garden as well as the nearby zoo invite you to stroll and relax. The equally picturesque area around Delitzsch with its lakes is easy to explore thanks to the well-developed network of cycle paths.
Tip: A spectacle worth seeing
Every noon at 12 o'clock sharp, Eve hands Adam an apple. The puppet show is located high up on the church spire of St. Peter and Paul. From its 50 m high tower, you have a beautiful view over Delitzsch. And if you want, you can go on an individual "eavesdropping tour" in the old town - an app-controlled listening experience. At 13 stations - the "listening points" - you can use your smartphone to call up short audio clips about the town and its rich history, or these are started automatically when the GPS signal on the smartphone is active. It is possible to join or pause at any station.
