Colditzer Kaolin ist untrennbar mit der Herstellung des ersten europäischen Porzellans verbunden. Aus einer Grube am nordöstlichen Ortsrand gewannen die Gelehrten Johann Friedrich Böttger und Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus einen der Rohstoffe für ihre erfolgreichen Experimente zur Erzeugung von Hartporzellan – seit 1708 in der Manufaktur Meißen hergestellt.
Der Ton dieser Lagerstätte entstand am Ende der Kreidezeit vor etwa 65 Mio. Jahren. Unter feucht-warmen Klimaverhältnissen bildete sich aus Quarzporphyr durch tiefgründige Verwitterung und chemische Prozesse Kaolin. Es lag wenige Meter unter der Oberfläche in einer 8 bis 12 Meter dicken Schicht an.
An der Dresdener/ Leisniger Straße gab es mehrere sehr ergiebige Gruben. Sie versorgten Colditzer Keramikfimen mit Rohmaterial, z. B. das gegenüberliegende Schamottewerk Eismann & Stockmann, die Steingutfabrik Thomsberger und Hermann oder mittels einer Drahtseilbahn über die Mulde hinweg die Steingutfabrik Colditz AG am Furtweg.
