Das markante Felsmassiv des Gerstenfelsens besteht aus verfeldspateten Gneisanatexiten.
Das harte Gestein des Gerstenfelsens – ein sogenannter „Gneis-Anatexit“ – entstand tief im Erdinneren durch partielle Aufschmelzung. Im Zuge der Hebung des Schwarzwalds wurde diese widerstandsfähige Gesteinsschicht an die Oberfläche befördert, wo sie im Laufe der Zeit zu dem markanten Felsen ausgewittert ist.
Im Gestein sind die bis zu 4 cm großen rosafarbenen Kristalle aus Kalifeldspat gut sichtbar.
