Wie die benachbarte Gletschermoräne ist das Eisloch auf dem Höchenschwander Berg ein Relikt der letzten Eiszeit.
Am Ende der Würmeiszeit vor ca. 12.000 Jahren überdeckte der vom Feldberg ausgehende Albtalgletscher auch die Hochflächen des Hotzenwaldes, darunter den Höchenschwander Berg. Weite Teile des Schwarzwalds waren von einer von ca. 1.000 km² großen Eisschicht überzogen, deren Dicke mit zunehmenden Niederschlägen anwuchs. In seiner Bewegung schob der Gletscher viel Geröll vor sich her. So bildeten sich Moränen, die nach der Eisschmelze zurückblieben.
Auf der sonnenabgewandten Nordseite blieb das Eis jedoch in den Hohlräumen zwischen den Felsbrocken erhalten, ebenso das im Winter neu gebildete. So verspürt man auch im Sommer am Eingang des kleinen Eislochs einen kühlen Luftzug.
