Viewpoint offering an overview of the geology of the Constantiaberge and Muizenberg mountains.
This lookout point along the Constantia Nek Jeep Track provides a rest stop and an overview of the geology of the Constantiaberge and Muizenberg mountains, which is similar to the geology of Table Mountain as explained in the guidebook, e.g., the Cape Peninsula Batholith, Graafwater and Peninsula Formations of the Table Mountain Group, False Bay Suite dykes, and Sandveld Group within the Cape Flats, as well as the tectonic processes that have shaped the structure and geomorphology of the Cape Peninsula and Cape Flats (i.e., Saldanian and Cape Orogenies and Gondwana break-up). Views of the “Vlakkenberg Monocline” fold are linked to compression with associated NE-SW orientated thrusting within the Constantiaberge and normal faulting within the Muizenberg block present. The geology and geomorphology also play a significant role in the microclimate features of the Cape Peninsula and Cape Flats (e.g., orographic rainfall on Table Mountain, the Cape Flats rain shadow, and early morning inversion layers in the Cape Flats between the Cape Peninsula and Hottentots Holland Mountains).
