But the stones are more than just a geological spectacle. They are also an archaeological monument of European importance, as the highest of the four rocks, the Feldstein, contains the remains of a prehistoric rampart from the pre-Roman Iron Age. Around 2,500 years ago, people used this peak as a place of refuge and worship.
A well-developed circular trail leads visitors through the area. Three of the four rocks - Bornstein, Goldstein and Ravenstein - can be climbed via steps and paths and reward the ascent with sweeping views of the Sauerland mountains. A visit to the Bruchhauser Steine thus impressively combines an archaic experience of nature with an immersion in the early settlement history of the region.
