Von 1913 bis 1939 wurde am Hohenstoffeln Basalt abgebaut. Dabei wurde der Nordgipfel fast abgetragen. Von den ursprünglich drei Gipfeln blieb nur ein Doppelgipfel (844 und 832 m) übrig. Seit 1941 steht der Berg unter Naturschutz.
