Located in the parish of São Bento, to the southwest of the Pena Traseira limestone pavement field (“lapiás”), they lie at an altitude of approximately 480 metres on Santo António plateau. They open up in Middle Jurassic limestone and are only a few metres from one another. Cofelo has a small circular mouth, while Bajanca, with its remarkable lateral extension, has good aerial visibility. These are sites of special speleological interest in the PNSAC and are included in the PR2 walking route as points of interest.
Cofelo Pothole has an elliptical entrance measuring approximately 5 x 3 metres. Although it was photographed and had some information collected by E. Fleury at the beginning of the 20th century, it was only in 1960/70 that the prospecting teams of the Portuguese Speleological Society were able to verify the similarities and identify it. On the walls of the well, which is around 50 metres deep, there is moss and some vegetation at the start of the descent, which continues on smooth limestone, with logs and mushrooms at the base. Bajanca Pothole is one of the best known in the region. It has two entrances: the larger one is about 35 metres long and around 30 metres deep, and the other, narrower, is about 4 x 3 metres. Of great beauty, Bajanca is abundant in vegetation cover - be it the surrounding vegetation, the moss or the organic matter that covers the walls and the subsidence blocks at the bottom of the cavity. Classified as a Shelter of National Importance for Chiroptera, it is closed to visitors during the bat hibernation period (December to February) as a measure to protect cave fauna.
