Historical Circular Route in Albersweiler

Information Board "The Quarry"

In 1291, the city of Landau was granted the right to use a quarry. The breaking and transport of building and paving stones has been mentioned since 1310. The quarry gained particular importance during the construction of the Fortress Landau from 1688 to 1691. A canal was dug for the transport of stones from Albersweiler to Landau. Mainly hard stones were quarried.
In 1872, the Palatinate Railway took over the southern quarry for gravel extraction. In 1904, the company Siegel & Sohn took over the northern and southern quarries. In 1913, the quarries received an electricity connection.
In the post-war period, the southern quarry was abandoned, and the northern quarry was expanded. The currently 15-hectare quarry belongs to Basalt AG (Kirn, Nahe). It produces 3000 tons per day.
