Explore the impressive history of the Salzach glacier and its impact on the valley, a relic of the last ice age.

About 20,000 years ago, the Salzach glacier reached its peak. Mighty ice streams from the side valleys shaped the valley in a U-shaped form and reached an overall height of about 1,300 meters above the valley floor. The steep trough walls on the flanks and the flatter trough shoulder are still recongnizable today, although post-glacial filling with debris has altered their shape.

The Salzach glacier crossed the Pass Thurn, formed the basin of Lake Zell, and even extended into the Alpine foothills. The dramatic retreat of today's glaciers in the Hohe Tauern is evidence of climate change, with the almost complete melting of the glaciers feared in the next hundred years.
