Up to 70 miners worked in the approx. 10 km long tunnels. The extracted ore was initially crushed and processed in stamping and washing plants in Walchen and Thumersbach before being transported as ore concentrate to the sulfur and copper smelting works in Mühlbach im Pinzgau. There, it was melted in shaft furnaces using charcoal, with the troublesome sulfur being removed in roasting ovens beforehand.
