Two timber-framed upper storeys with characteristic gable projections rise above a massive, brick-built first floor. The mighty crippled hipped roof with numerous dormers and a side elevation gable indicates the building's former use as a warehouse. Customs officials lived on the first floor, while the upper floors were used to store taxes in kind, tithes and rents from the "lower lordship" of Ulm.
Geislingen's convenient location on the Albaufstieg has shaped the town since the 5th century. Later, the town became even more important thanks to the famous railroad tracks between Stuttgart and Ulm - one of the first mountain crossings in Europe.
After the end of the imperial city period in 1803, the building lost its function as a customs station and from then on served as a residential and commercial building. In the 19th century, several citizens divided the house into individual floors, and later stores were built on the first floor. The building has been owned by the city since 2012. After extensive renovation, the half-timbered building now shines again in its historic golden ochre.
There is a literary connection to Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, who worked as an organist in Geislingen and married the daughter of the Oberzoller here.
