Built by order of Dom Pedro II in the 17th century, this fort was tasked with protecting the Portuguese coast from pirate and corsair incursions. Strategically located on a cliff facing Pessegueiro Island in Porto Covo, the fort was part of a defensive system that included a small fort on the island, which was left in ruins after the devastating earthquake of 1755. The fort's garrison remained active until at least 1844. In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, the fort was declared a Monument of Public Interest in 1957 by decree no. 41191 issued on July 18 of that year.
