The old fortress of Corfu, also known as "Palaio Frourio", is a historic fortress on the island of Corfu in Greece. The fortress was built in the 15th century by the Venetians and later expanded by the British and French.
The fortress is surrounded by high walls and towers and offers an impressive view of Corfu town and the Ionian Sea. Inside the fortress there are a variety of buildings and structures, including barracks, magazines, chapels and gun emplacements. Some of the buildings have been destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries.
During the Ottoman occupation, the fortress was of crucial strategic importance and served as a defensive position against attacks. In the 19th century, when Corfu became part of the British Protectorate, the fortress was converted into a prison and remained in use until the independence of Greece in 1864. There is also a small museum within the fortress that highlights the history of the fortress and the island of Corfu.
