The fortress is part of the fortress system in south-eastern Finland, which was built in the late 18th century to defend St. Petersburg against the Swedish border.
The Taavetti fortress, located in the center of Luumäki, is a bastion fortress from the end of the 18th century and it represents the earliest stage in the fortification of Luumäki. The construction of the Taavetti fortress started already in the 1770s. The village of Marttila, at the intersection of four roads, was considered a strategically important place to build a fortress. This is where the Ylinen Viipurintie leading from Hämeenlinna to Viipur and the road leading inland from Hamina met.
The construction of the fortress was decided on the day of the memory of Saint David of Thessalonica and it was named after him. You can get to know the fortress on your own, either by taking a tour indicated by the guide boards, by going around the frisbee golf course, or even by having a snack. Guided tours are organized in the fortress in summer. There is also a fun track that runs through the fortress. In the summer, events and singing evenings are organized in the fortress. The most famous events are the music event Vallijamit and the Marttila village market.
