Um 1209 wurde der Hof Pfaffroda vom Kloster Ossegg angelegt. Hierbei handelte es sich um eine Höhenburg in Spornlage. In der zweiten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts erwarb Peter von Schönberg die Herrschaft Sayda und erhielt damit auch Pfaffroda, dessen Rittergut erstmals 1512 urkundliche Beachtung fand. Zwischen 1575 und 1578 wurde das Schloss unter Caspar von Schönberg unter Einbeziehung der vormaligen Burg erbaut. Die Beschädigungen im Dreißigjährigen Krieg wurden wieder behoben.
1945Hubertus Diener von Schönberg wurde 1945 enteignet. Ab 1947 wurde das Schloss als Altersheim genutzt. Es brannte 1953 ab und wurde wieder aufgebaut.
