Runkelstein Castle houses a valuable secular fresco cycle in eight rooms
Runkelstein Castle (Castel Roncolo) was built beginning in 1237 by the brothers Friedrich and Beral von Wangen. The castle complex, which remains very well-preserved to this day, includes a courtyard, a west wing and an east wing, a summer house, a castle chapel, and a defensive tower.

Runkelstein Castle is famous above all for its colorful frescoes, which is why it is also called the “Castle of Pictures.” These paintings are part of the largest secular fresco cycle of the Middle Ages. Among other things, they depict scenes from court life, biblical stories, and images of notable figures such as Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great.
