Explore Kaprun Castle, soak up its medieval atmosphere and climb to the panoramic viewpoint in the keep - a real time-travel outing above Kaprun.

From the moment you step through the gate, you can feel it: history is woven into every stone. Kaprun Castle has watched over the valley for centuries and remains one of the region’s most striking landmarks. Its origins are thought to date back to the 12th century, when it was built by the Falkenstein noble family from Upper Bavaria. Over time, ownership and importance changed, and the castle eventually fell into decline. From 1975 onwards, it was carefully secured and restored with great dedication – and today it once again shines as an impressive setting where past and present meet.

As you explore, you’ll discover historic rooms, small exhibitions and intriguing features such as the dungeon. Just below the castle, the little St James’ Chapel adds an extra touch of charm to the ensemble. One of the highlights is the climb up to the keep: a staircase leads you to the highest point, where you’re rewarded with sweeping views across the Zell Basin and the surrounding mountains.

Whether you visit for a relaxed tour or a special event, the castle’s atmosphere makes it a memorable experience.
