Hammershus - Northern Europe's largest castle ruins
The ruins of the medieval fortress Hammershus are impressively situated on a steeply rising rock at the northern tip of Bornholm. It is no wonder that Hammershus is one of the most visited sights on Bornholm. Built around 1255, the castle captures the imagination and lets you experience Bornholm's rich history up close.
Hammershus was not only a hard-to-conquer fortress that was used for defense until the 17th century. The castle was also the prison of the king's daughter Leonora Christine and her husband Corfitz Ulfeldt in 1660 and 1661.
Since 2018, the visitor center has provided information about the history of Hammershus. In the store and café, you can buy souvenirs and enjoy a coffee with a wonderful view of the castle. While Hammershus is not barrier-free, the exhibition in the visitor center can also be easily visited by wheelchair users.
