Bologa Fortress, located at the foot of the Vlădeasa Massif in the Apuseni Mountains, is one of the oldest and most significant medieval fortresses in Transylvania. It was first documented in 1304 under the name Sebuswar. Over the centuries, it played a crucial strategic role and underwent several expansions until the 18th century.
Its circular keep is one of the few preserved in Transylvania. In 1399, King Sigismund of Luxembourg donated the fortress to Mircea the Elder for his contributions in the wars against the Ottoman Empire. The fortress gained importance in the 17th century as a defense point against Turkish advances.
In the early 18th century, during the uprising led by Prince Rákóczi II, the fortress was blown up to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Kuruc forces. A local legend claims that Mircea the Elder’s sword is still hidden among the ruins.
